How do I know if
I'm the right type for modeling or acting?
The next time you watch a movie or television,
notice the types of people in the films roles and commercials. Yes, the
"super model" promotes make up, but what about the middle-aged, lovable dad
at the dinner table, or the grandma coming over for Christmas? There are
many different kinds of people in film and television.
I
don't necessarily want to model, but could I benefit from learning acting or
modeling skills?
Yes, absolutely. Models and actors know how
to stand out in a crowd. Learning modeling and acting skills can increase
your confidence for public speaking, school and social events - particularly
weddings where you always want to emote your best presence.
I've
always wanted to model, but I think I'm too short, old or whatever.
Modeling has different facets. Maybe you
don't fit the 5'10", young and thin category, but there may be plenty of
commercial print categories where you do fit. Ask yourself who the
advertisers are targeting the next time you are reading a magazine ad or
company brochure. Chances are the target is a "real" person such as
yourself.
Do I need an agent?
This depends on your market. If you are
in a very large market, an agent not only gives you protection, but also
clout and far more opportunities. If you are in a small market,
freelancing is advisable, but if an agent is available in the small market
as well, it is advisable to get trained and registered with an agent.
Why
do I need training if I'm a "natural?"
The industry is extremely competition and
there are a lot of people who want to act and/or model. If you have a
natural ability, all the more chance you will be very successful once you
have been properly trained to industry standards. It's the old saying that
just because a person is gifted with figuring out the law, it doesn't mean
he or she can skip law school. Acting and modeling is a very serious
business. Those who take it seriously, know the importance of adequate
training.
